Why old films feel different

There is a kind of patience in them that newer films rarely allow. A scene is permitted to simply exist for a while before it justifies itself. The camera trusts you to be bored for ten seconds. That trust is the texture. Fewer cuts per minute Faces held longer than comfortable Silence used as a material, not a gap to fill I don't think it's nostalgia. I think it's a different theory of the viewer's attention — one that assumed attention was a thing you gave, not a thing to be captured.

Every Noise at Once

everynoise.com

A single page that plots every genre Spotify has a name for onto one scatter map — down and left is denser and more atmospheric, up and right is spikier and bouncier. Click anything and it plays. wonky, escape room, vapor twitch, deep discofox — genres you didn't know had names, arranged so neighbours actually sound like neighbours. The whole thing is one guy's side project running off Spotify's audioanalysis data. I've lost whole evenings just wandering it.

Things that broke my brain

The ones that rearranged some furniture up there and never quite put it back.

Things I'd erase my memory to experience again

First-time-only magic. The knowledge is the whole thing, so you only get to spend it once.
